Contest Guidelines for Online Submissions:

Review what a "biography" is. Review how to write a "biographical essay."

Conduct research on Sonia Sotomayor. Make sure to use credible sources.

Compose a biographical essay on Sonia Sotomayor in Google Docs.

Submit your biographical essay by Friday, May 1, 2020 @ 6:00pm.

Email it to or share it with [email protected].

Write "essay contest" in the subject area.

In the email, include your full name, grade level, and advisory teacher.

Contest Guidelines for Hard Copy Submissions:

Go to Konawaena Middle School office and pick up a work packet. Information and resources for the essay contest will be in the work packet.

Read the following resources.

Resources on Sonia Sotomayor.

Compose a biographical essay on Sonia Sotomayor on binder paper.

At the top right corner of the first page, write your full name, grade level, advisory teacher, and "Sonia Sotomayor Essay Contest."

Drop your biographical essay off at the Konawaena Middle School office by Friday, May 1, 2020 @ 4:30pm (office closing time).

You can also mail it to 81-1045 Konawaena School Road, Kealakekua, HI 96750. The school must receive it by Friday, May 1, 2020 @ 4:30pm.

1) This week each of you will create a short story from the point of view of any animal without revealing what you are.

2) Post your short story HERE in this Question Post.

3) Later this week, we will comment on each other's stories and guess what you are! Here is my example:

I slide through the dense, dark jungle on my belly as the full moon crests above the distant mountain. I am hungry, and night time is my time to feed in the cool shadows that the evening sky provides. My eyes are built to see in the dark, and I use all my fine-tuned senses to seek my prey. I flick my tongue out into the air; I think I smell my quarry nearby. Although I am attuned to hunt at night, my prey is also well adapted to stealthy and successfully hide out. I must use all my skills and senses to hunt my dinner. The last few nights I have gone home to my burrow with a disappointingly empty stomach. Thankfully, I only need to eat once every few weeks due to my extremely slow metabolism. But wait...what was that?? I hear a scurry in the bushes to my right, and I sense a small, warm presence trembling close by. Again, I flick my tongue out into the night air; this time I definitely smell my prey. I slither silently through the jungle floor, every so slowly. I recoil slowly, ever so slowly, compressing every muscle in my body. Then....SNAP! In a flash, I fly out at my prey, using every ounce of energy in my body. Success! The small jungle rat is mine. I slowly swallow it whole, then I slither back to my burrow before the sun crests over the nearby mountain. I will be full and satiated for weeks to come. What am I?

2) Then, open the attachment below, ANSWER THE REFLECTION QUESTIONS AND TURN THEM IN HERE BY FRIDAY.
3) Soon you will see instructions on how we will continue with your Kulia project remotely for now, if you choose to do so.

3)After looking at these GLOBAL issues, what are 3 different LOCAL issues that you could focus your Kulia project on? (Feel free to do some outside research here to answer these questions).

4)As of now, what are your personal top 3 picks for your real Kulia topic, and why are you considering each one?
